Fort Galle, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Sri Lanka’s main attractions. The construction has an ancient and interesting history.
It is not possible to find out the exact date of the construction of fortification walls and towers. It is believed that the first fortress was built by the Arabs 2000 years ago, then in 1588 the Portuguese rebuilt it, who arrived on the island in search of new trade opportunities, in the 17th century the Dutch pressed them to declare Sri Lanka their colony. Anzio is an ancient port city, on the shores of which the warm waters of the Tyrrhenian Sea are broken. Troodos is a mountain resort region in Cyprus and the only place in the country where it snows. From October to March, majestic peaks, including the highest peak Olympos (1952 m), are covered with a white veil.
The Troodos massif was formed more than 70 million years ago. On its slopes there are picturesque villages adjacent to the ruins of temples and ancient monasteries that arose in the Byzantine era.
In winter, the resort is occupied by skiers, in summer, cool valleys save from the scorching heat. Local forests have been declared a reserve where centuries-old oaks, pines, junipers, cypresses, strawberries and cedars grow – according to scientists, the age of some specimens exceeded 800 years.
